About Old Parked Cars Vancouver

Old Parked Cars Vancouver is a photo blog about old cars seen on the streets of Vancouver, Canada, updated on a frequent basis. I guess it has turned out to be a way of seeing cars in a different way. It was originally inspired by the blog "Old Parked Cars", by Ben & Tony Piff. My thanks to those fine gentlemen for their example and dedication.

Another particular inspiration was the post "Luxury No More" on the blog "Seattle's Classics". When I first saw those pictures I was blown away. I do put my own twist on things, leaving interpretation up to the viewer.

The odds are that you will have a opinion of the cars and pictures you see here which is different from my own. I welcome hearing from you in the comments section.

About tags: You will have noticed all those tags at the bottom of the posts. Want to see all the posts of cars with four round headlights? Click on quad round headlights. Just Toyotas? Only from the 1960s? Etcetera.

Software used to organize and manipulate these pictures:

Ubuntu Linux

A fine free operating system and alternative to Windows.

darktable

Importing, cropping, straightening and tweaking (Linux, Windows and macOS)

The Gimp

Image editor with numerous helpful features (Linux, Windows and macOS)

Shotwell

   Organising and tagging (Linux only)

Phototini

More exif and xmp manipulation (Linux and Windows). This replaces ExifTool and pyExifToolGUI which, for whatever reason, have stopped working for me. Your mileage may vary. If you use Windows, you can also try ExifToolGUI.

DigiKam

Now (April 2020) Phototini has stopped working for me. I have replaced it with DigiKam, just for the advanced tagging facilities (Linux, Windows and macOS)

JSSOR
An open source Javascript and CSS toolkit used to produce the slideshow you see in your web browser

With an extra thank you for the assistace of Prayag Verma without whom the new format would have been impossible. Most of the discussion and adapted code is here, or just study the source of one of my posts.

Code::Blocks

I used the Code::Blocks IDE to develop a bit of custom software in C++. It takes the HTML produced by Blogger and generates the JSSOR javascript to power the slide show you see in each post. Some day I may post the code, but it's really crude, and probably of little interest to anyone but me.
May 2023: I've managed to adapt this program to work on Windows using Visual Studio Community Edition. It's really overkill for my purposes but it works.

Google Chrome

I use the Chrome web browser when I'm setting up posts on Blogger, it seems to work best for such things. Otherwise I still use Firefox, a fine piece of open source software.
